Part 1

Introduction:

ﺃﻭﻟﺌﻚ اﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﻛﻔﺮﻭا ﺑﺂﻳﺎﺕ ﺭﺑﻬﻢ ﻭﻟﻘﺎﺋﻪ ﻓﺤﺒﻄﺖ ﺃﻋﻤﺎﻟﻬﻢ ﻓﻼ ﻧﻘﻴﻢ ﻟﻬﻢ ﻳﻮﻡ اﻟﻘﻴﺎﻣﺔ ﻭﺯﻧﺎ.

Translation:

“Say (O Muhammad SAW): Shall We tell you the greatest losers in respect of (their) deeds?
Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life while they thought that they were acquiring good by their deeds!
They are those who deny the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of their Lord and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter). So their works are in vain, and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall not give them any weight”
[al-Kahf 18:103-105].

Translation:

Hazrat Abu Said Al-Khudri narrates: While we were with Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) who was distributing (some property), there came Dhu’l-Khuwaysirah, a man from the tribe of Bani Tamim and said, «O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Do Justice.» The Prophet said, «Woe to you! Who could do justice if I did not? I would be a desperate loser if I did not do justice.» Umar said, «O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Allow me to chop his head off.» The Prophet (ﷺ) said, «Leave him, for he has companions who pray and fast in such a way that you will consider your fasting negligible in comparison to theirs. They recite the Qur’an, but it does not go beyond their throats (i.e., they do not act on it), and they will desert Islam as an arrow goes through a victim’s body.

Islam is a religion of unity and harmony. It has always urged Muslims to hold firmly to the rope of Allah, made them aware of the virtues of unity and concord, discouraged discord and division, and warned about their harmful consequences.

Allah Almighty commands:

Translation:

And hold firmly together to the rope of Allah and do not be divided. Remember Allah’s favor upon you when you were enemies, then He united your hearts, so you—by His grace—became brothers. And you were at the brink of a fiery pit and He saved you from it. This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you, so that you may be ˹rightly˺ guided.

Translation:

Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not dispute with one another, or you would be discouraged and weakened. Persevere! Surely Allah is with those who persevere.

If we were once a civilized and sophisticated nation in the past, it was by virtue of our unity and concord. The strength and invincibility we once commanded on the global stage were a direct result of our steadfast refusal to allow discord to infiltrate our ranks. Our ancestors, who ruled over the earth for centuries, were able to do so because they were attuned to the taste and pleasure of unity.

Why, then, has the Muslim Ummah today become trapped in a whirlpool, the likes of which are unparalleled in the pages of history? Why, for instance, do we find ourselves bereft of unity and solidarity? Why is there no singular leadership within the Ummah? Why have we splintered into factions? Why do we endure life under the yoke of poverty, displacement, and the dominion of disbelief? Why is our enemy powerful and dominant? Why are we not able to attain modern material progress?

A discerning mind can grasp and answer that this is because we have not truly grasped the practical meaning and significance of the warning given by our Lord. This ignorance is a direct result of our selfish and material desires.

Thus, it can be asserted that those most afflicted by these issues are the deviant and misguided groups that have troubled the Muslim Ummah from its inception until today.

Among all these deviant groups, the foremost is the Khawārij, or in contemporary terminology, Daesh.

The trials and tribulations that these deviant factions have wrought upon us throughout history will be discussed in the next few installments.
